Slowly the garden grows this year. The cool weather has kept most of of veggies pretty small, but it looks to be warming up. The breeze blowing through our kitchen window at the moment though is calling my bluff.
I planted three varieties of cucumbers this year: pickling, slicing and a funny lemon cucumber variety. They took a while to sprout but are growing happily now alongside some nasturtium transplants.
Our carrot patch is a funny, tangled mess, but they are faring well so far. I am not sure when to harvest carrots. I picked one the other day to see how they are faring--it was about three inches. Any tips?
I planted our buttery garden in a particularly bad patch of dirt in the middle of our yard. I have been slowly trying to enrich the area with our compost. Our bee balm seems to be happy about that.
We just added two baby chicks to our growing flock of chickens. Our Barred Plymouth Rock loves meandering about the garden. I have a sneaking suspicion that I know where all of our caterpillars are going this year.
What is growing on your spot of land this year?

I love it--"The Farmette"! I looked up when to harvest carrots in one of my books, but it wasn't very helpful. I've forgotten which variety of carrot I planted in which row (even though I supposedly wrote it down)--short and stubby or long and thin?, so that's making for some interesting guesswork. I *thought* they were supposed to push up out of the ground a little like radishes do (?) I've been digging down a little around the top--if they look orange, sometimes I give them a pull, but so far, most are still too small. I've also been trying to remember how long the tops on carrots are at the store. This is my first year in three of trying that I actually have carrots growing, so I'm pretty happy with that, but it would be nice to harvest at the right time.
Wish my cucumbers looked like your's, mine are just spindly little things--I think I'm going to try replanting one more time. I really want to make some pickles this year!
That's a cute little chicken girl you've got there. :)
Your carrots look lovely- I've never been good at carrots. The only thing I do know is that they take quite a while!
I had thought to try out that lemon cuke variety and didn't get around to it- it'll be fun to see how yours turn out!
Love your little "farmette"! Love those nasturtiums - we have some coming up in our garden. We tasted lemon cucumbers at the farmer's market last year - they were so refreshing and yummy!
I'm a little nervous about the state of our garden while we've been away. A friend has been watering but not weeding - it may look like a jungle when we get back this week.
