Making Play Dough!

A good friend of mine reminded me of the wonders of play dough and children this morning (honestly, the only real memory I have of the stuff outside from making spaghetti with a plastic contraption is eating it, and eating a lot of it, but that is another tory...). So, with an empty afternoon on our hands, we headed to the store for our ingredients and then embarked on our mission.

I found the recipe for homemade play dough here. The whole process took less than 30 minutes, and, as it turned out, the making of it was more fun than the playing with it. Harvey spent most of his time throwing the final product on the floor and Norah spent her time shrieking with frustration at Harvey for throwing it on the floor. Ahhhh... all in a day's work.

I'm a HUGE fan of homemade play dough. It's such a pleasure to touch and knead. As a play therapist (and in my classroom days), I refuse to have that stinky factory stuff touch the kids' hands. I haven't looked at your link yet, but there's oh so much you can do to make it a great experience. I used to put essential oils in mine. Lavender calmed, it really did!

I love marla's idea of essential oils, never thought of that one. It is awesome that you are so creative, you are providing Norah and Harvey with such a wonderful role model.

Little Tiny used to make this a lot when I was little- she even made Christmas ornaments out of it (apparently you can bake it if you want to preserve what you've sculpted for posterity). She made little sculptures of each of us. If you haven't already discovered this, a garlic press makes great play-dough hair! :)
P.S. I've got a blog now, too: www.lostandfoundblog.wordpress.com.I'd love to have you come & visit!

Love it! I can just picture Norah and Harvey! So much better than the store-bought stuff! (Plus Griffin might bankrupt us on PlayDough.) Definitely going to give it a try. I'm going to let him take the "slop" out of a pumkin while we carve it today - should be fun!
