Nature Study Monday: Baltimore Oriole

Oh I spotted something yellow at the feeder!  At long last!
We have here what (I think?) are two female Baltimore Orioles.  They visited us a while back; I haven't posted about them yet because I have not been entirely sure what to call them.  I keep coming back to this identification so I think I will stick with it.  If you know better, please enlighten me!

These birds don't generally spend their winters this far north which has only confounded me more.  They do however spend summers with us, so maybe some early migrants?

Orioles are songbirds whose nests are gourd-shaped and hang from a trees branches.

I'm thinking that those are goldfinches in winter plumage. Goldfinches are in the northeast year round and are frequent visitors to the feeder.
Orioles are fruit eaters that do not eat seeds. They usually don't come back to my state (Massachusetts) until May. I hang oranges out for them in the spring and summer :-)

*Beautiful* photo!

Whatever they are, the splash of yellow is exciting! I have always wanted to see an oriole nest--love the shape!

I love birdwatching in my backyard too. I'm not familiar with orioles. I don't think we have them in Nevada.

I can't believe all the birds you get to your feeders!! Quite impressive and so fun for the kids and you to learn about.
