Nature Study Monday: Yarrow

Yarrow, native to Europe but found widely throughout North America,  is a new addition to our garden this year.  While I have planted many seeds and bulbs, I have not put in nearly any plants.  Yarrow was one of the few that I added, having spied this butterfly friendly plant at the nursery.  It's tiny pinkish blossoms caught my eye and the knowledge that it thrives in poor soil sold me.

Since planting it, I have learned of a whole host of other uses for the plant.  For medicinal purposes, it can help stop bleeding, fight cold and flu symptoms, and break a fever (amongst other uses).  I also learned from A Dyer's Garden that combined with alum, it can be used as a yellow dye plant.

This plant is a perennial so I am hoping that it will live on in our garden for years to come!

I have a packet of yarrow seed that I haven't planted yet--I got it because I heard that deer don't like it--so glad the butterflies do! Do you know if it's invasive?

I LOVE yarrow. I just got a combo of perennial plants for our front garden and yarrow is among them. There is something very attractive about these plants, and of course the benefits they produce are a bonus. I am excited to have it too : ) Wendy- I don't believe they are invasive. Sachi- what did you find?

It's so pretty! I love that pink. And it surely does look like the perfect plant for butterflies.

What a pretty pink! All of our yarrow is white - I don't think I've anyone grow that color here in AK. Enjoy your butterflies.
