January 11: Monday Cooking Challenge

So, I really REALLY don't like eating fish. I know I am supposed to eat it- low in fat, high in Omega 3s, blah, blah, blah, but I just. don't. like. it. I didn't eat fish growing up so I never got accustomed to the smell or texture of it. My husband, however, loves it so I go through periods where I try to find ways to cook fish that won't make me want to hurl. I even set goals sometimes--fish twice weekly, for example. But then I give up and go back to our carnivorous ways because, again, I just don't like fish.

Sadly, the salmon dish I cooked up for the challenge didn't change my mind. I used Dr. Bruce's Awesome Grilled Salmon recipe from Feeding the Whole Family. I marinated the salmon for an hour in a soy, ginger, garlic concoction (trying to drown out the flavor, of course) and then grilled it for about ten minutes.

The end result was enjoyed by everyone but the cook...

Come join Once Upon a Parent, Musings on the Simple Life, Young Ones, Whirliegig, Chickens Counting and Earth Mama for the Monday Cooking Challenge.

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't like it. It took me quite a while to learn to really like fish. I still don't cook it that often myself, but I do order it when we go out and do the occasional salmon dish about once a month or so. I've been wanting to do some fish tacos, maybe I'll give them a try one of these Mondays and post the recipe. Here's to some happy eating tomorrow!

I don't like salmon either. I like fish in general, just not that one. Totally sucks though b/c Dumb Dad is a huge fan of the stuff. Blech! Good luck on your next dish!

I, too, have this thing where I feel like I really should like fish, but for the most part it's just too... fishy. That said, one of the ONLY fish recipes I've tried that I liked was a salmon recipe close to yours. My marinade is: soy sauce, ginger, olive oil, and honey. The honey is KEY, because it caramelizes when the salmon is grilled and gives it this amazing sweet glaze. OK, I'm probably not going to convince you to give it another try... but it could be the difference that makes you a convert! You never know! :)

Salmon is one of my favorites. But I do love fish and would take it over other meat any day. Keep trying!! Do you like shrimp?

My grandmother used to make salmon patties smothered in sauces for us and I loved them. But once I grew up and had "real" salmon... ugh. It took me a while to appreciate it's flavors. Like Laura, I found that I preferred a sweeter glaze and that there are just some salmons that taste, well, fishier. It's fantastic that you gave it another attempt. Perhaps one day you'll find a fish that you enjoy. The recipe, btw, sounds fabulous!

Salmon is a very strong-tasting fish. The various white fish might be easier to "disguise" with marinades. Just a thought (although you have probably already experimented with this).

Oh fish a love or leave kind of creature. We definitely love it here and I recommend fish cakes if you are not a big fan. The breading might really help and the kiddos seem to love them. Maybe give a white fish a try next time because it is usually mild (still stinky, but mild). I cooked trout last week and LOVED it. And make sure to give yourself some pats on the back every time you make fish because hopefully your kids are learning to love it.

Ddd you ever try Seafood Magic?

That is what changed my mind about fish. Just take your fish rub a little olive oil on it and sprinkle generously with seafood magic..then grill. I challenge you! I LOVED it!!
